        AN EVENING WITH

        KELLY GALLAGHER-ABBOTT

Learn about the newest techniques, tools, gadgets and tricks.

Jukebox is known for being on  the cutting edge (sometimes over the edge!).  Designers with Jukebox include many international award-winning  quilters who are using innovative  techniques.  This presentation will show many of these techniques (including one Kelly says is the biggest thing to hit quilting since the rotary cutter), tools, gadgets and tricks.  The talk is rich with information about what judges are looking for, and how to correct the most commonly seen areas of weakness.  Kelly creates and/or quilts an average of 40-50 quilts quilts a year, so has refined many time saving methods.  This jammed-packed presentation will leave everyone raring to get home and get going.  Even the most experienced quilters will smack their foreheads when they learn new hints that are guaranteed to save time and increase accuracy and success.

This lecture includes a slide presentation and brief trunk show.

        About Kelly Gallagher-Abbott

Although I was educated in the science and art of nursing and worked as a high-risk labor and delivery nurse, I have always been very interested in textiles and art.  I began quilting in 1988, and shortly after that began both my family and Jukebox Quilts.  I've designed a fabric line, many patterns for quilts, digitized quilting and embroidery motifs, and have written several books.

In 2003, I took over as the curator of the Hoffman Challenge, a job I loved, as it provided me with a wonderful opportunity to use the many skills I’d acquired over the last several years, as well as the chance to interact with the approximately 600-800 competitors and hundreds of exhibitors, guilds, and shops who displayed this impressive and creative collection of quilts, garments, dolls, and accessories.

In 2010, my husband and I became the longarm dealers for a five state area. We carry Innova Longarms, Juki sewing machines, and Bravo 16 needle embroidery machines. We have a large shop in Northern Colorado, and enjoy every aspect of this job.

          ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:

Recognized internationally for her expertise in quilting, Marci enjoys sharing ideas that simplify the process of quilting.

A native of Dallas, Texas, Marci has loved sewing for years, making her first quilt at age 9 and sewing her own clothes in high school and college. She began teaching quilting in 1989 for her local quilting guild and shops. Marci graduated with a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in math. In 1993, she started Alicia’s Attic with concepts that combine her love of math with her love of quilting. Quilting became a great way to share her knowledge with others.

She has been featured in Redbook, on Home and Garden TV’s Simply Quilts, Quilters’ News Network, NBC’s The Jane Pauley Show, and has been published in American Quilter Magazine and Traditional Quiltworks.

In 2006, she expanded Alicia’s Attic by purchasing Clearview Triangle from Sara Nephew. They continue to collaborate on new designs and techniques.

Marci and her husband, Clint, currently live in Fort Collins, Colorado, where they enjoy the outdoors and the beauty of nature that is so abundant in Colorado.

          AN EVENING WITH MARIA SHELL

Maria Shell started out as a traditional quilter, but soon found herself making abstract pieced art quilts that look surprisingly modern. Maria will share her personal journey along with some fun historical facts about all three quilt genres. What does it mean to be a 21ST Century Quilter? Come to the lecture to find out.

          About Maria Shell

Maria Shell’s work is grounded in the tradition and craft of American quilt making. She strives to take the classical components of a traditional bedquilt and manipulate them with the hope of creating surprising combinations of pattern, repetition, and color for the viewer.

Maria is the recipient of a Sustainable Arts Foundation 2011 Winter Award, a Rasmuson Foundation Project Award and two Rasmuson Fellowships (2009, 2013, 2017). She has had several solo and small group shows including fiber at the Fitton Center for Creative Arts in Hamilton, Ohio, Right Lines & Circles at the Ormond Beach Memorial Art Museum and Gardens in Ormond Beach, Florida, Line + Shape at the Hello Stitch Studio in Berkeley, California, and The Pieced Canvas at the Visions Art Museum in San Diego, California. Her most recent solo exhibition is Off the Grid which will be on view at the Shelburne Art Museum in Shelburne, Vermont from May—October 2022. Her first book Improv Patchwork—Dynamic Quilts Made with Line & Shape was published in 2017.

          Maria resides in Anchorage, Alaska.

            MAKING PRINTS with Maria Shell

All of my workshops are designed to work with a variety of skill levels within the same class.  While each of my workshops cover color, pattern, and repetition which are core components of my work, the focus--indicated in the title of the class--allows us to zoom in on a particular aspect of quilt design.  Subject matter includes, but is not necessarily limited to the following--exploring color theory, composing abstract design, improvisation-ally cutting and piecing fabric, working with prints, and trouble shooting patchwork construction issues.

In this class, students will learn how to piece an assortment of prints--stripes, dots, track, and plaids. While learning how to build these new units, students will also be given information about working with solids colored fabrics, improvisational piecing techniques, and ideas for taking these techniques and creating original quilts.

            ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

My artwork is firmly grounded in the craft of quilt making. It has taken me many years to acquire the cutting, piecing, and quilting skills that I now use daily. Vintage and contemporary commercial solid and print cotton fabrics, as well as hand dyed cotton fabrics I have created, are the materials I use in my work. These textiles are cut primarily without rulers and stitched into a two dimensional surface. Once I create this pieced canvas, I spend hours on my long arm quilting machine stitching the top to cotton or wool batting and a fabric backing. The final step is to bind or face each individual piece.

I have always been interested in pattern and how complex pattern can also create complex figure ground composition. In 2011, I began to wonder what would happen if I selected a particular pattern–in this case the grid–and continued to play with it over the course of a series. What I discovered is that limiting the pattern but manipulating the line, color, and shape, can produce dynamic results that not only stand alone as compelling individual compositions, but also are intriguing to look at as a group.

Limiting the structure of my work to a grid has allowed me to more fully explore my love of color. How to make color vibrate on the wall? Most often the answer lies in proportion of line and shape in relation to color.

                AN EVENING WITH SWAN SHERIDAN

Join us in this lecture with Swan which includes a showing of 30 or more quilts and focuses on building and utilizing a color stash in both modern and traditional quilting designs.

                About Swan Sheridan

Swan Sheridan : President and Artist

Swan Sheridan was born in Bend, Oregon and currently lives in Vail, Arizona with her husband and daughter.

Swan's interest in all things textile related began when she was very young.  She tried everything from spinning wool to cross-stitch, and finally landed in the world of quilting during grad school.  She dabbled in applique with that first quilt in the interests of covering a mistake, and thus did necessity become the mother of invention.

Applique took over Swan's quilting life in 2004 while she was pregnant with her daughter.  In 2009, with her daughter in preschool, Swan began to refine her applique skills with unique designs.  Shortly afterwards she took a job with Bella Quiltworks in Tucson, Arizona, which offered her the opportunity to be immersed in the quilting world in a whole new way.

Swan began producing patterns for sale in early 2013 and regularly exhibits her work in local shows.  She teaches in Tucson, offering classes in applique, color, hand quilting, and decorative stitches.

This 6 hour class is taught in two sections.  The first 4 hour section is focused on students learning how to fuse a relatively large flower (20 inches), quarter it into sections, pin baste, and applique their flower by exploring the decorative stitches on their machines.  Afterwards, students continue working on creating their other 3 flowers.

In the final 2 hour section of the class, students will learn how to trim down their blocks to the right size and assemble them using a variation on the "quilt as you go" method.

                    AN EVENING WITH SHELLEY CAVANNA

Shelley has a passion for intricate, mosaic-inspired quilts.  She loves creating designs with layer-upon-layer of elements that weave in and out of one another creating depth and movement.  Shelley loves to make quilts that can be viewed not only as a collection of beautiful blocks, but also as large-scale, cohesive pieces of art!

This lecture shares the story of Shelley's design evolution as a self-taught quilter, from drawing awkward templates with her third grade ruler to her current love for mosaic and knit inspired (and increasingly complex) projects.  The lecture shows the progression of how she developed her signature mosaic style and how she's helping quilters of all skill levels make their own stunning quilts....simply!

                    About Shelley Cavanna

Shelley is a quilter, teacher, author, and textile and quilt designer who resides near Sacramento, CA with her husband and two boys. Her love of crafting was passed on and lovingly fostered by her Mom and Granny.

Shelley is a self-taught quilter who was bitten by the quilting bug in 2007 when she bought her first sewing machine.  She played around with classic quilt blocks and deciphered how to use pre-cuts to make them.

With degrees in English and History...and quite a lot of experience with technical writing during the seven years she spent on staff at her local university...stepping into writing quilt patterns was quite natural!  She opened her first independent design company under the banner of Poplun Designs (the Croatian word for quilt)  and in 2013 decided to re-brand and re-open as Cora's Quilts.

So who is Cora, then?  In truth, no one!  Shelley has loved the name ever since she fell in love with The Last of the Mohicans in High School.  It's a lovely nod to her Irish heritage and love of historical novels!
