  AN EVENING WITH KATE COLLERAN

  Join us as Kate discusses different quilt styles and uses quilts from her patterns, her book, and ones that she's had published in magazines to show how to make the same quilt or block in different styles.  She will talk about a mix of styles , color choices  and inspiration for quilt ideas.

  Have you ever looked at a quilt block and thought...hmmm...I wonder what happens when I change up this part of the block?  Will that look good or weird?

  In this class, we will explore ways to take traditional quilt blocks and rearrange the colors or their elements to create new blocks.  I will share tips from other designers on ways to approach a block remix.  We will explore how line, color and shape can affect the final look and ways to consider the effect when putting your new blocks together.

  We will talk a lot about color and value.  We will take a block and play with graph paper, pencils, bits of colored paper, and scissors.  Once you have a new block, we will review easy quilt math so you can make it!

  This workshop will be both IN-PERSON and on ZOOM.

  SUPPLIES TO BRING:

  • Your inner child who loved coloring
  • Your imagination and sense of play
  • Graph paper
  • Pencil
  • Scotch tape
  • Eraser
  • Paper scissors
  • Colored pencils
  • Paper for taking notes

  If you want to bring some bits of fabric, you can play with that, too!

  Instructor will bring:  Colored paper, extra colored pencils, graph paper, tape, images of blocks, and a willingness to help you play and hear your ideas!

  ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
  

  

  "My teaching philosophy is to provide a relaxed, stress free atmosphere, where everyone can have fun. I like to show students different ways to approach a techniques to they can find the way that works best for them.  I provide tips and tricks to help students confidently move forward with their sewing and quilting.   Learn more about this national grassroots movement where quilters create and award over 30,000 Quilts of Valor a year to veterans and active-duty service members.  Quilts of Valor provide comfort and healing to those who have served and been touched by war.  We'll share more about what a Quilt of Valor is, the inspiration behind the movement, and ways quilters can become involved to honor service members and veterans in our community.

  What is a Quilt of Valor?
  

  A Quilt of Valor^® (QOV) is a quality, handmade quilt that is machine or hand quilted and  is awarded to a Service Member or Veteran who has been touched by war.    

  To use the term Quilt of Valor, Quilts of Valor or QOV, the quilt must be a specific size, must have a label with required information, it must be awarded (it is not a gift) and it must be recorded.

  About Lori Thompson
  

  Lori served as the Executive Director of QOVF from late 2021 through 2023.  A quilter with a nonprofit management background, Lori was privileged to serve QOVF in this role and meet quilters across the US who are passionate about QOVF's mission.  She was inspired by family members who served in WWII, the Vietnam War, and the National Guard to support QOVF.

  Lori is a quilter and longarm quilter who lives in Aurora, Colorado with her family.  She also runs Colorado Threadworks, a long-arm quilting , media, and design business.  Lori is a former Extension Home Economist for Kansas State University and found her love of sewing .. learning as a 4-H kid in Kansas.  She has been a guest on AccuQuilt's Facebook Live, Electric Quilt Company's blog, MSNBC's Morning Joe show, and will appear on "For the Love of Quilting" in 2024.  She has been a member of ACQ since 2020.  When she's not at her sewing machine or longarm, she enjoys traveling and spending time with friends and family.

  Come and join us for a good, old fashioned block party where we will be crafting blocks for Quilts of Valor. 

  

  We'll make the 2024 QOVF Block of the Year, the Ohio Star, and learn more about QOVF's mission to provide comfort and healing to active duty service members and veterans.  We'll also share free patterns featuring this year's block.

  This will be a fun day of sewing with a light breakfast fare provided, prize drawings and possibly a visit from a special guest or two.

  Included in your registration fee is a fabric bundle and pattern to make at least 2 Quilts of Valor blocks.  Additional fabric bundles will be available for a small fee, with all proceeds donated to support ACQ Charitable Activities - including Quilts of Valor and patriotic quilts for the Women Veterans Program at Clermont Commons.
