Arapahoe County Quilters

Celebrating the Art of Quiltmaking for 30+ Years

Program Report September 2022

September 06, 2022 1:30 PM | Lynn Roginski

September Program

Join us online on September 8th for our Guild Meeting with Maria Shell from Alaska as she presents “Traditional, Art, Modern: Notes from the Field!”.  Maria is a prolific and award-winning quilter, author, and teacher whose improvisational style, intricate piecing, and bold color use are exceptional.  She started out as a traditional quilter, but soon found herself making abstract pieced art quilts that look surprisingly modern.  Maria will share her personal journey along with some fun historical facts about all three quilt genres (Traditional, Art, Modern) and what it means to be a 21ST Century Quilter.  Zoom presentation.

September Workshop

On September 10th and 11th, join on online for our two-part workshop, “Making Prints” with Maria Shell.  Learn how to piece an assortment of prints—stripes, dots, tracks, and plaids—while learning how to work with solid colored fabrics, improvisational piecing techniques, and ideas for taking these techniques and creating original quilts.  In addition, students will explore color theory, composing abstract design, improvisation-ally cutting and piecing fabric, working with prints, and trouble shooting patchwork construction issues.  Zoom presentation.

This class will be held in two sessions, on September 10thand 11th from 10am – 1 pm.

UPCOMING PROGRAMS - OCTOBER AND NOVEMBER

All programs are open for Early Bird Registration!

Join us online for our Guild Meeting with Swan Sheridan as she presents “Color Theory Applied”.  This lecture includes a showing of 30 or more quilts and focuses on building and utilizing a color stash in both modern and traditional quilting designs.  Zoom presentation.

NOTE - Swan is offering all ACQ members a 20% discount on any purchases from her website from now until Saturday, October 22nd.  This discount is valid for any number or amount of purchases made during this time frame.  Use code ACQ20 when ordering.  Class signups are not included in this offer.

This 6 hour class is taught in two sections.  The first 4 hour section is focused on students learning how to fuse a relatively large flower (20 inches), quarter it into sections, pin baste, and applique their flower by exploring the decorative stitches on their machines.  Afterwards, students continue working on creating their other 3 flowers.

In the final 2 hour section of the class, students will learn how to trim down their blocks to the right size and assemble them using a variation on the "quilt as you go" method.  Zoom presentation.

We welcome Shelley Cavanna of “Cora’s Quilts” for our online Guild Meeting as she presents “Modern Mosaic Quilts”.  Shelley has a passion for intricate, mosaic-inspired quilts and loves creating designs with layer-upon-layer of elements that weave in and out of one another creating depth and movement.  Her quilts look complicated, but are easy to make.  Join us for her lecture as Shelley shares the story of her design evolution and shows the progression of how she developed her signature mosaic style.  Zoom presentation.

Learn Shelley's techniques, tips, and tricks for making these dreamy, mosaic-inspired nine-patch blocks!  Use her favorite Stitch + Flip techniques - and your favorite fat quarter bundle - to make a truly stunning quilt ... made simply!  Zoom presentation.
