February 8, 2007 - Annette Kennedy Lecture: Possibilities with Paint
Annette Kennedy is a local artist who currently resides in Longmont with her husband, Rick. She is inspired by nature’s beauty, especially from hikes in Rocky Mountain National Park. She has a passion for amateur photography and a love of fabric and color. She is drawn to creating landscape and pictorial art quilts using photographs that she has taken. Using a variety of techniques, including piecing, free motion embroidery, beading, and quilting, coupled with commercial, hand-dyed, and hand painted fabrics, Annette creates one of a kind art quilts Often, she paints on the surface of her quilts to add detail, texture, and depth with shadow elements. The lecture, Possibilities with Paint, will include a brief personal history about how Annette came to make quilts from photos and started painting on the surface. There will be a slide show of pictorial quilts before they were painted on and what effect (details, shadows, depth) were achieved with fabric paint. March 8, 2007 - Melody Johnson Melody describes herself as an artist whose medium for the last 24 years has been quiltmaking. She was a professional dyer for 12 years and formed a company with Laura Wasilowski called Artfabrik. This creative duo traveled to quilt shows and conferences selling their hand dyed fabrics and threads, while at the same time making award winning quilts and teaching workshops in fusing both here and abroad. The Chicago School of Fusing, a completely imaginary school, became world renowned due to the musical antics of these two artists. Her education includes a BA in painting and drawing from Northeastern Illinois University in 1981 and an MA in Fibers from Northern Illinois University in 1984. Melody’s quilts have been exhibited in national shows such as Mancuso shows, the American Quilter’s Society, the International Quilt Festival in Houston and Chicago, Visions, and National quilt. Her major awards include a 1995 AQS Best Wall Quilt and in 1998 the IQA’s Pfaff Master of Machine Artistry. April 12, 2007 - Janet Jo Smith Lecture: Copyright for Quilters and Other Visual Artists What is an “original” design? If you change the colors, can legally you copy the design of another quiltmaker? When is a design “in the public domain” so that anyone can use it? These are questions that arise daily for quilters. This lecture/workshop is your opportunity to get some legal guidance without the usual legal fees. Janet is an attorney, licensed in Colorado and Kansas, who specializes in copyright and contracts for the visual artist. Ideally, this subject is presented as a workshop for a maximum of 25. She lives with her husband of 30 years and has a son and a daughter. Quilting has been a big part of her life for over 20 years. Carolyn worked and taught a variety of quilting and craft classes at Patchworks in Bozeman, Montana from 1987 to 1995. In 1995, she invented the Add-A-Quarter Ruler to make rotary cutting easier. The ruler has now become a standard tool for the paper piecing method. Carolyn will also have 2 books published by Kansas City Star: Hard Times-Splendid Quilts and Carolyn's Paper Pieced Garden.
Sherrill Kahn has been creating award-winning drawings, paintings and fiber art work for almost forty years. Her work can be found in many private collections throughout the world. She loves to weave, quilt, airbrush, bead, sew, knit, crochet, draw, paint and rubber stamps. In addition, Sherrill makes creative books, innovative jewelry and dolls, paints and decorates every surface imaginable, and constantly explores new materials and new techniques. Discover how to modify and combine the piecing of the block when you add a line or fill in a space, then combine two or three more shapes and see what happens. Watch as Pam Clarke guides you step by step in how to design around the piecing of the block. Double Wedding Ring, Flying Geese, 9-Patch, and an Eight Pointed Star will be the topic of discussion and design. This lecture is for the serious quilter to gain confidence, the skill to try out new ideas and develop new techniques. Come to meeting with a lap board and colored pencils.Pam Clarke has been quilting since the late 1960’s and sewing for 46 years. She lives in Spokane WA and grew up in Sacramento CA. Pam has been machine quilting and teaching machine quilting, piecing and appliqué classes since 1988. She is the owner of Homes Stitches, a professional machine quilting business that was started in 1988, and Log Cabin Dry Goods Quilt Shop which offers Longarm machine rental, classes and quality fabric. Her work can be seen in several published magazines and books. She quilted for Debbie Mumm, K-P kids, Fiber Mosaics, Mary Lou and Company, Fabric Sales, Kaufman, Bernantix, Retta Weirheim and Martingale. To this date she has quilted over 7000 quilts and has made several hundred. Pam has appeared on Quilt Central and with Linda Taylor for PBS. Pam teaches all over the USA including IMQS, Innovations, Machines in Motion, The Home Machine Quilt IMQX in NH and several local shows in the Northwest. Herr favorite type of quilting is appliqué mixed with simple piecing with a scrappy look that has won her numerous ribbons across the USA. Designs with Lines is another business that was started by Pam Clarke in 1998. This technique was designed to help speed up the quilting process by using simple lines as a guide to create individual designs. Pam has been creating her own stencils for several years and this technique is used for the home machine quilter or the Longarm machine quilter. She has available 8 videos from Beginning to the Advanced Machine quilter, along with Sketchbooks full of ideas to go along with her stencils.
