A Message From the UFO Queen

The Year End Inventory of a Quilter

As the year winds down it is customary to look back at our accomplishments for the past year and make resolutions for the next year.  My personal goal is always to finish few old UFOs.  I have to say I was pretty successful in the UFO arena this year.  Even though I do not keep an exact score of how many I have done I know I have finished more than handful and I feel good about my diminishing UFO pile.  Or is it (diminishing)?  It seems that for every finished UFO I have added several new projects I started almost every month.
I see an interesting pattern in a new issue of a quilt magazine – and off I go and get bunch of fabrics from my stash and start to cut and sew.  I visit a quilt store and I spot a beautiful quilt made from a new line of fabrics.  It is a feast for my eyes and I can’t resist – I buy several new pieces of fabric and immediately start cutting and sewing. At some point I start to feel guilty I have broken my own promise not to start anything new until I have completely exhausted my UFO pile or at least finished what I am currently working on.

Sounds familiar? I often ask what is it that makes me and a lot of my quilting friends to start a new project or projects before the ones we are working on are completed. I know I am not alone in this behavior and this behavior is not indicative of quilters only. Several of my co-workers are into other hand crafts and they report similar behavior. Why do we get bored with something that we so enthusiastically started just few weeks ago? I am still looking for the answer but in the meantime I am happy that I still have a quilt or two (or more) in my UFO stash. After all, finishing UFO quilts is my claim to fame.  So as the year is coming to an end – have you completed what you have started this year and have you made your UFO pile bigger or smaller?  And what is your New Year’s resolution about your quilting habits? To finish or not to finish – is that the question?.  And the answer is… well, you will let us know when you show your UFOs at the upcoming Show & Tell.  After all you have plenty of time now – at least 12 months until the next year end inventory.

I wish you a prosperous year 2008 and many finished UFOs!
